Built in 2013, Fortress House is a fully detached 5 bedroom eco-home within the Dulwich Wood Conservation area in South East London. 

 

The house has a U-shaped plan that wraps around a central courtyard with glass walls, allowing morning and afternoon sunlight to filter through into the interior spaces. A high 40-meter long stained timber wall screens the house from its neighbours and gives a fortress-like feel. Full-heigh glazed sliding doors on both floors help create a strong relationship between inside and outside. 

 

Similar to the traditional courtyard typology, the inner cores are private, secure and well-ventilated with the outdoor environment intended as an extension of the family space.
